Anne Merci Georges is 75 years old and was born on the island of La Gonave. Her parents died when she was very young, so she was raised by her aunt. She grew up as a reste-avec, which means she was the one that cooked, cleaned and took care of the livestock for her aunt and cousins. When asked if she went to school, she laughed and said that even her aunt’s own children did not go to school. She met her husband at age 20 and moved to Minoterie where she built her life and made a living off of her small business “commerce” selling rice, beans, charcoal and flour. She has 5 children and 21 grandchildren, enjoys going to church and telling jokes!
